Neuerscheinung: Taking Measures: Usages of Format in Film and Video Art

The book’s title—Taking Measures—has a double meaning: as a reference to the practices of measurement and to the political potential of power and resistance. Throughout their history to today, film and video have served as measuring devices for scientific, economic, political, and other purposes, and have been employed in a variety of fields beyond art. In acknowledging these uses also lies the opportunity for art to test its own effectiveness in public space and to uncover potential for resistance in artistic action.
This book—which has evolved from a series of dialogues between artists and researchers as part of the research project Exhibiting Film: Challenges of Format—addresses issues of measures and formats in both content and design. In which practices of measurement, of the production of knowledge and evidence in the interest of useful research, are film and video involved? In what way can artistic practice not only make these involvements visible but challenge and test them? How can technologies of measurement in art be used politically and be made operative for the public sector? How can formats themselves, as the measures of art, be exhibited? How can they be put in relation to exhibition spaces and their economies of valorization, and how can this relationship be assessed? These questions are explored in illuminating and richly illustrated essays.

ecooperations, documenta fifteen, Kassel

As a group of researchers, thinkers, curators and artists, we will explore both the ecologies and technologies of cooperation (artistic, activist, curatorial, etc.). Media formats and infrastructures play a central role here, as they enable and regulate processes of sharing and exchange. In this context, artists and activists depend on the same media ecological environments into which they simultaneously intervene. This points to a field of tensions between global and local ecologies, where dissonances can be identified and, accordingly, signify both creative potential and political challenges. From an interdisciplinary approach, we will inquire into these questions and speculations. Rather than striving towards a coherent product, we aim to elaborate and present fragments of thought in public discussions, exhibitions, workshops, and essays that will be published in collective formats. The first series of planned activities will take place in Kassel on 21 and 22 July 2022 on the occasion of documenta fifteen. The project is supported by the University of Kassel and the newly founded documenta Institut, the University of Zurich and Zentrum Künste und Kulturtheorie, it is jointly organized by Liliana Gómez (University of Kassel) and Fabienne Liptay (University of Zurich).

On dis:connectivity in some works by Stan Douglas

In the lunchtime colloquium of the Käte Hamburger Research Center "global dis:connect", Fabienne Liptay will present her ongoing research project, focusing on some works by Stan Douglas. At "global dis:connect", she is investigating artistic and non-artistic uses of formats that challenge notions of connectivity. The focus is on contexts, in which formats based on interoperability not only facilitate processes of global networking, but also produce disconnections that are politically and socially effective.

format : dispositif, international symposium, Zurich

The international symposium is an attempt to systematically relate "format" and "dispositif" as key theoretical concepts that make it possible to address films as heterogenous ensembles in terms of knowledge hierachies and power structures. Both concepts have participated in radically opening the discipline to new objects and dimensions of research, and they have had an important impact on the profound epistemological shifts that have recently transformed the discipline. If "dispositif" has allowed for the renewed consideration of material and political media history, "format" has furthered this approach to include ecological and infrastructural aspects. However, a critical evaluation of the relatedness of the two concepts, along with their significant divergence and theoretical legacies, has not yet been undertaken. The symposium is jointly organized by Prof. Dr. Fabienne Liptay (UZH) and Prof. Dr. Benoît Turquety (UNIL). It is part of the interuniversity doctoral program "Visual Dispositifs: Film, Photography, and Other Media", University of Zurich and University of Lausanne, and the SNSF project "Exhibiting Film: Challenges of Format".

Neuerscheinung: How To Teach Art?

How to teach art? What kind of knowledge should artists absorb? How might an ordinary person become a creature addicted to the creative process; a non-artist become an artist? Such programmatic questions articulated by the acclaimed Polish artist Artur Żmijewski were at the heart of the workshop “How to Teach Art?” Between April and July 2018, Żmijewski invited a group of graduate and PhD students from three Zurich universities—the ETH (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology), the UZH (University of Zurich), and the ZHdK (Zurich University of the Arts)—to collectively reflect on their artistic practices. This book co-authored by Wiktoria Furrer, Carla Gabrí, Nastasia Louveau, Maria Ordóñez, and Artur Zmijewski retraces the workshop and its process by means of inconclusive, fragmentary results between theory and practice. It presents drawings, videos, photographs, 16mm films, and accompanying reflections on the central premise, “How to Teach Art?”
